Photo: Rohan Smith, The Chronicle Frequently, when discussing consumer-driven weight loss apps, health care professionals lament that many of them dont rely enough on science. That frustration was one of the things that motivated Stanford behavioral scientist Abby King to design her own apps . Often, King has said, those apps dont rely on science-proven strategies for motivating behavioral changes, and thus healthier habits and weight loss. A recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine confirms this assertion. It found that of the bevy of weight-loss available on the iTunes store and elsewhere, most do not employ thoselong-established strategies proven to bring about changes in behavior. Thirty commercially available apps were examined to see whether they included any of 20 behavioral change strategies based on evidence.

Brain Mechanisms Behind A Debilitating Sleep Disorder

Many sleep disorders can involve sexual behaviors

When the norandrenaline system stops working properly, it fails to keep the motor and cognitive systems coupled. This results in cataplexy — the muscles fall asleep but the brain stays awake.” Peever and Christian Burgess, also of Cell & Systems Biology used hypocretin-knockout mice (mice that experience cataplexy), to demonstate that a dysfunctional relationship between the noradrenaline system and the hypocretin-producing system is behind cataplexy. The research was recently published in the journal Current Biology in September. The scientists first established that mice experienced sudden loss of muscle tone during cataplectic episodes. They then administered drugs to systematically inhibit or activate a particular subset of adrenergic receptors, the targets of noradrenaline.

Sleep Disorders, Attention Problems Linked

Sexsomnia is officially recognized as a subtype of parasomnia, a group of disorders that includes sleepwalking, sleep talking and night terrors, among others. But abnormal sexual behaviors can affect people with a wide range of sleep-related disorders, according to the new report, published in the journal Sleep. Inappropriate sexual behaviors have been described in people with sleep disorders as diverse as parasomnias, severe insomnia and restless legs syndrome. In some cases, the sexual behaviors are not sexsomnia, but occur during waking hours, explained Dr. Carlos H. Schenck, the lead author of the report and a senior staff psychiatrist at the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Minneapolis. One example is Kleine-Levin syndrome, a rare disorder that causes recurrent bouts of excessive drowsiness and sleep.

The researchers studied 34 people with obstructive sleep apnea. Nearly half of the group (16 people) showed signs of possible or probable attention deficit disorder. All the participants were then given continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), the most widely used treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP uses a machine that delivers forced air through a mask over the nose (and sometimes also the mouth) to keep the airway open.

The Top 5 Vitamins You Should Not Take

Vitamins – Introduction

This question has been studied exhaustively: a review in 2005 covering 50 years worth of research concluded that the lack of effect throws doubt on the utility of this wide practice. Although Vitamin C is generally safe, megadoses of 2000 mg or more can increase the risk of kidney stones , which can be excruciatingly painful. RELATED: 10 Healthy Snacks To Eat At Your Desk 2.Vitamin A and beta carotene. Vitamins A, C, and E are all anti-oxidants, which have been promoted for their supposed anti-cancer properties. The evidence doesnt support this: for example, in a large study supported by the National Cancer Institute *, smokers who took vitamin A were more likely to get lung cancer than those who didnt. Vitamin A plays an important role in vision, but too much vitamin A can be toxic, causing multiple serious side effects . Perhaps the most famous cases of vitamin A toxicity occurred in early polar explorers, who ate the livers of their sled dogs, not realizing that the livers had excessively high amounts of vitamin A.

Vitamins and Supplements for ADHD

Unlike carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, vitamins are not sources of energy. Instead, vitamins are chemical partners for the enzymes involved in the body’s metabolism, cell production, tissue repair, and other vital processes. Vitamins are either fat soluble or water soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins, which include A, D, E, and K, are absorbed by the body using processes that closely parallel the absorption of fat. They are stored in the liver and used up by the body very slowly. The water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B complex vitamins.

Several studies have shown a reduction in hyperactivity and impulsivity with zinc supplementation. The same studies, though, report no change in inattentiveness, which is another key symptom of ADHD. A 2005 study in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, though, did show a correlation between zinc levels and teacher- and parent-rated inattention in children. Foods high in zinc include oysters and other seafood, red meat, poultry, dairy products, beans, nuts, whole grains, and fortified cereals.

Exercise works as well as drugs for some ailments

Financial incentives prompt doctors to step up care for patients

They called for additional research and noted that their study is limited by the scarcity of studies on exercise interventions and by any limitations of the studies they used. They were inspired by the well-documented benefits of exercise, including improved health and less likelihood of such things as needing hospitalization. Also, only a third of adults in England meet the recommended levels of physical activity, but drug prescription rates are on the rise, with the average person there having an average of 17.7 prescriptions in 2010. A survey released Wednesday by Kaiser Permanente about walking in the United States found that almost everyone knows its good to do. But nearly 80% said they should walk more. The researchers were from the London School of Economics , Harvard medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, and Stanford University .

Exercise Could Help Stroke, Heart Disease Patients Just As Well As Drugs

Better Skin Sweating it out could help you get your glow on post-workout, too. As Dr. Katz explains, your skin is the largest organ in your body. And as we slough off tons of skin cells each day, we need to give our body the right construction materials — healthy foods, regular exercise, plenty of oxygen — to rebuild. ” If you’ve got good construction material,” he says, “you can build healthy skin cells and you have good skin.” Skin also tells the story of what’s going on inside your body. “The skin is the window dressing.

Hormone Therapy Not For Disease Prevention: Study

That risk also fell once women stopped taking estrogen. However, women who only took estrogen were less likely to develop breast cancer over the entire study period than those in the placebo group. Considering all the evidence, the researchers write that estrogen plus progesterone or estrogen alone should not be used to prevent chronic disease. That advice jibes with the government-backed U.S. Preventive Services Task Force’s recommendation against taking hormone therapy for the prevention of chronic disease (see Reuters story of October 22, 2012 here: reut.rs/16UNO3w The researchers add, however, that hormone therapy is a “reasonable option for the management of moderate to severe menopausal symptoms among generally healthy women during early menopause.” Manson said probably fewer than one in 100 younger women taking hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms over five years would develop a health problem as a result.

Study: Hormone Therapy Not for Disease Prevention

Video Gazans Fear Egyptian Political Backlash Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have suffered in recent months, as the Egyptian government has closed the vital Rafah Crossing for long periods — blocking thousands who work, study or need medical treatment from going abroad. Egypt says the closures are part of an effort to end militant attacks in the Sinai that have killed more than 100 Egyptian security personnel. VOA’ s Scott Bobb reports some Gaza residents believe other motives are behind the move. Video Afghan Media Fears Loss of Editorial Independence The independence of Afghan journalists and editors is increasingly at risk in Afghanistan and a proposed new media law could make conditions even tougher, activists say.

Hormone Therapy Linked to Higher Breast Cancer Death Risk

VIDEO: Breastfeeding May Prevent Breast Cancer

Women in the study who used estrogen and progestin for five-and-a-half years — which is considered long-term use of the therapy — were at higher risk of getting breast cancer, said Chlebowksi. Earlier results of this trial indicated a connection between synthetic hormone therapy — commonly marketed as as the drug Prempro — and less aggressive forms of breast cancer . But results now suggest that women who took hormones may be at risk of any, including more aggressive and late-stage, forms of breast cancer. null “For women currently on HRT, I think it warrants a significant talk with their physician as to whether they warrant the therapy,” said Dr.
